Meet Mr. Free
Hi! My name is Brian Free. (Yes, that is “F-r-e-e,” as in “Gratis.”) after having a great first year at Brogden, I am excited about the 2008-2009 school year. I believe this is an excellent school! Prior to coming to Brogden I taught four years in Sanford, North Carolina. Before moving to North Carolina, I attended Milligan College in Tennessee, where I met and married my college sweetheart. We have two beautiful daughters. This summer my family traveled to Southeast Asia, where I grew-up.

We consider Brogden to be a READING CULTURE. In an effort to encourage all students to read as often as possible, we expect all students to have a novel with them at all times in their core classes. In doing this, when a student finishes something early, like a test, they will be expected to read instead of talking to their friends.
We will be very busy this year tackling all of the following curriculum elements:

• Introduction to Language Arts
• Reading Logs
• Reading Response Journals
• Book Talks
• Writing: Personal Narratives,    argumentative, persuasive, expository
• Grammar
• Folklore & Mythology
• Short Stories
• Novels
• Literature Circles – Medieval, Holocaust
• Drama
• Poetry
• Genres – historical fiction, realistic    fiction, nonfiction, etc
We will read the following titles as a class:

• Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
• Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
    by Mildred D. Taylor
• Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
    by Ronald Dahl
• Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
• Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
• The Cay by Theodore Taylor

(If this seems like a lot, get prepared because these are not all the titles we will tackle. If you have read any of these already, get ready to dig deeper!)
